Product information
Discover the charm of Chive Seeds (Allium schoenoprasum),
A beloved perennial herb with a mild onion flavour in both its lush, green leaves and delicate edible flowers. Chives are a must-have for every kitchen and garden, offering versatility and beauty. Their pretty pink to purple flower heads make them a standout in herb gardens or as an attractive edging plant. Perfect for pollinators, these chives thrive with minimal care. Simply cut the leaves about 2cm from ground level. Reaching a height of approximately 20-30cm (8-12 inches) and spreading around 20cm, chives are perfect for adding a mild onion edge to salads, cooked dishes, and potato salads. Enhance your garden and culinary creations with this perennial favourite.
Handy Tip: Young plants can be sown and nurtured on a windowsill all year round. Alternatively, you can lift and pot up a small clump in the autumn, placing it on the windowsill for a fresh supply of herbs during the winter months.

When to Sow | All year round on a windowsill March to May outdoors. |
Where to Sow | Sow seeds in small pots of compost, lightly covering them with a sprinkling of compost. Water well and place at a moderate temperature. Alternatively, sow outdoors from March to May where they are to crop, directly into finely-prepared soil. Chives prefer a fertile soil with some moisture but will grow well in dry conditions too, including gravel and rock gardens. Position in full sun. |
What to do Next | Grow a few plants on a light windowsill for easy kitchen use. If transplanting outside, gradually harden off in a cold frame before planting out. Seeds sown directly outside should be thinned out to allow adequate spacing between plants. |
Harvest | Chives can be harvested all year round, once they reach a suitable height. Pick a few leaves from each plant to ensure they regrow quickly. Be sure not to cut lower than a few centimetres above the soil. |
