Technical specifications
Approx. Seed count | 700 seeds |
When to Sow | February to March |
Where to Sow | Sow seeds on the surface of moist, firmed compost in pots or trays. Maintain a temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F). Do not exclude light after sowing, as it aids germination (10-21 days). |
What to do Next | Transplant seedlings into pots or trays when they're large enough to handle. Gradually acclimatize young plants to outdoor conditions over a few weeks. Plant out in well-drained soil in full sun, spaced appropriately, after the risk of frost has passed. |
Flowers | June onwards |
Flower Seed Sowing Technique for Half Hardy Annuals | Use seed trays or plastic modules with good seedling compost. Firm and moisten compost before sowing. Mix fine seeds with dry horticultural sand for even distribution. Cover seeds with compost or vermiculite based on seed size. Thinly sow seeds, cover trays with glass/paper or a polythene bag. Remove cover as soon as seedlings break the surface; keep moist. Prick off seedlings into trays when true leaves form, spacing them apart. Gradually acclimatize seedlings by increasing ventilation. Transplant outdoors after 7 days in the cold frame. |
