Give your garden a spring transformation with our step by step guide to planting up a hanging basket!Planting a hanging basket for spring & summer
Get your gloves on, grab your equipment and let's get started! In this article, we will walk you through how to make your own beautiful baskets at home. Our hanging basket is made up of peat-free compost, two varieties of pansies, heather and ivy.
Prepare your basket
If using a wicker hanging basket, make sure the inside liner has a few holes to allow excess water to drain out. If you use a plastic hanging pot, ensure that it has drainage holes. If not, drill one in.

Next, fill the basket to about halfway with an all-purpose or basket compost.
Get planting
Put your most striking and eye-catching plant in the middle of the basket, as that will help to create the framework around which you will build the other plants.
Next, evenly space some luscious trailing plants to add texture and height such as trailing lobelia, verbena or fuchsia around the sides of the basket.
Leftover space?
Pansies, begonia, nemesia make fantastic filler plants and why not add some ivy for hardy, evergreen foliage all year round. Fill any remaining gaps with compost and firm gently to secure.
